How to Fill a Colibri Zippo Lighter

Colibri introduced the world’s first automatic lighter in 1928 and has created butane lighters ever since. Colibri makes lighters with multiple beams, automatic starters, beam starters and even flameless lighters. Like all butane lighters, eventually the fuel in a Colibri lighter will run out and will need to be replaced. Colibri lighters have a valve on the bottom where butane can be added when the lighter has run dry.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Wait a few minutes after using the lighter before filling it.

    • 2

Turn the lighter over so you are looking at the bottom and turn the adjusting screw clockwise to set the flame adjuster to the lowest setting. The adjusting screw on some Colibri lighters may require a flathead screwdriver to turn them. Some lighters may also have a small Phillips head screw on them. Do not touch this screw, as it will disassemble the lighter.

    • 3

Press the screwdriver into the refilling valve either inside of, or right next to, the adjusting screw. Continue to apply pressure until you no longer hear a hiss.

    • 4

Place the stem of the butane can into the refilling valve. You may need to press down slightly. Keep both the lighter and the butane can straight during the refilling process. Hold this position for about 5 seconds, then remove the refill can.

    • 5

Press on the refill valve for just a moment with the screwdriver again. A small amount of air will escape. If any white liquid escapes, it means the lighter is full.

    • 6

Wait three minutes for the lighter to warm up. Then adjust the flame height and test the lighter.
