Types
There are different types of spey blades. Apart from the normal spey blade, there is a spey budding blade, a long spey blade and a long curved spey blade. All of these blades are used for different purposes due to the slight modifications in shapes and features.
Uses
Traditionally, the spey blade has been used for neutering farm animals. Additional shapes of the spey blades allow for a variety of uses. The budding blade is used for grafting buds on plants. The long spey blade as well as the long curved spey blade is used by trappers to cut animals.
Advantages
Spey blades make it easier to skin smaller prey. They are safer to use because of their blunt edge. If the blades are used with a lock back knife, they are even easier to use and can be operated in one hand.
Modern Knives
Though the uses of spey blades are limited, they usually come as a part of utility knives. Pocket knives also usually have a spey blade. Modern trapper knives contain two blades--a larger trapping blade and a small spey blade for skinning.
Considerations
Though spey blades have been traditionally used by trappers and hunters because of the safety they offer against accidents, they are not considered the best choice for field dressing game. There are more advanced modern blades that can be used for the same purposes for which spey blades were once used.
