Remington Pocketknife Information

Prior to World War I knives made in Sheffield, England were the highest in quality. After the war the Remington Company led in arms production, and they had the facilities to produce high quality knives, according to the All About Pocket Knives website.
  1. History

    • Before 1920 Britain and Germany led the knife import business, but many of Britain and Germany's greatest cutlers were casualties of the war, which proved disastrous to their respective knife industries. After World War I, with idle arms factories, Remington had the facilities and funds to re-direct their attention to producing high quality pocket knives.

    Versions

    • Using a single handle form, Remington was able to make numerous versions of the pocket knife with the bullet knife emerging as the favorite, according to Trails.com. The bullet knife, named after the bullet-shaped cartridge on the handle, became the company's best seller and is now highly sought by collectors. Remington continued to release 20 different variations of the bullet pocket knife between the years 1920 to 1941.

    Materials

    • Remington's pocketknife, in its many variations, was consistent with a single handle pattern which was made of a material called pyremite, developed by Remington, according to the website allaboutpocketknives.com. Pyremite was a plastic that could be dyed different colors which provided even more variations to the pocket knife patterns.

    Quantities

    • Claiming to have over 700 different pocket knife patterns, Remington was producing 10,000 knives per day prior to the Great Depression. With World War II looming in the future, Remington was bought by the Dupont Company who eventually discontinued the cutlery business in 1940. Dupont then sold the cutlery equipment to the Pal Company who made a few military knives but scrapped the cutlery equipment permanently in 1950.

    Collectors

    • Newer Remington knives are in circulation even though the Remington Company has departed from the cutlery business, according to the website allaboutpocketknives.com. Other companies have manufactured reproductions of older patterns on contract and many of these have become quite valuable and collectible. Some of the original bullet pocket knives manufactured by Remington are still available and among the most valuable collectible knives in existence.

    Collectible Series

    • Made in the USA, Remington collectible knives are available in "Anniversary" editions, according to the Remington website. There are the Official Boy Scout of America Knife, Heritage Series Knives, Premier Series, Sportsman Series and the Limited Edition Collectibles which include the annual release of the Bullet Knife.
