How to Clean Collectible Knives

Collectible knives are kept either as ornaments or part of an antique collection. Like other types of metal, the alloys that make up collectible knives can be damaged by oxidation. Fingerprints or other types of moisture on the blade of the knife will aggravate the damage. In order to avoid rusting and other problems with your collection of knives, it is a good idea to clean them regularly with a soft cloth.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the knife from its sheath, if needed.

    • 2

Wipe down the blade of the knife with a soft, clean cotton cloth, such as flannel. Remove any fingerprints or other marks on the blade.

    • 3

Place 1 to 2 drops of quality knife or metal oil on the blade and wipe it down well with the cloth, coating the blade with oil. Gun cleaning oils are high quality oils that can be used for knives.

    • 4

Apply a spoonful of antique wax to the knife's handle, if it is made of wood, and rub it in with a new clean cloth. Use the wax on other wooden parts of the knife, and rub it in as well.

    • 5

Re-sheath your collectible knife when you are finished cleaning.
