How to Find Good Violas

A viola is a member of the violin family, and, like a violin, rests on the musician's shoulder and is played by running a bow over the strings. Because violas do not come in a standard size, it is important that the violist select one that is the right fit. If you want to purchase an instrument, go to a reputable dealer, music store or viola maker.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the musician's arm to get a size range within which to start choosing the instrument and look for violas of the same length. Hold the instrument under your chin and try to reach the end of the scrolled section with your hand while maintaining a slight bend in your left elbow. Curl your hand around the outside of the neck and press the strings to get an idea of how easily you could manipulate them.

    • 2

Test the pegs to see if they turn easily so that you will be able to tune the viola correctly.

    • 3

Stroke the strings and listen for a tone that pleases your ear and can be described as loud, warm, rich, and even, rather than soft or whiny.

    • 4

Examine the instrument for cracks and signs of repairs, especially involving the seams, because this will alter the sound of the viola.

    • 5

Ask the seller for the age of the viola---a well-aged instrument often sounds fuller than a new one because the wood hardens over time and becomes more resonant. On the other hand, a new viola is preferable to an old viola with many repairs. A good new viola will improve with age. For the buyer, the condition of an old viola must be weighed against the advantages of the structurally perfect condition of a new instrument.
