How to Identify a Midge Doll

According to Fashion Doll Guide, Mattel created the Midge doll as Barbie's best friend in 1962, three years after they produced the first Barbie doll. Mattel created only three Midge models before replacing her with other dolls such as PJ and Stacy. Starting in 1987 and through the 1990s, Mattel again began making Midge dolls. There are a few simple things to keep in mind when you're determining a true vintage Midge doll.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide if the Midge doll is truly vintage. There have been many reproductions of Barbies, and even times where people have placed original vintage heads on reproduction bodies, or vice versa. Mattel created Midge's body to look exactly like Barbie's. If she is truly vintage, she will have the year stamped on her.back underwear region. According to Doll Habit, even some modern Mattel dolls will have "1966" stamped on their necks, so if you see this on her neck she might be a later model or reproduction.

Find pictures of Midge dolls. Mattel made most Midge dolls with the same body type as Barbie, but with differences in their face and hair. Most of the time Midge will have freckles, a turned-up nose, and may or may not have teeth showing in her smile. Her eyes might also slant to the side. Her hair is normally shoulder-length and curly. You can see pictures of Midge dolls in Barbie collector's guides and on popular auction selling sites.

Take your doll to a local dealer or doll show. You can call a local dealer to see when doll shows are coming to your area; most larger cities will have at least one per year. You can also check sites like Doll Show to see show listings. Most dealers are happy to see new dolls and educate people on what to look for. You might even be lucky enough to find a dealer that specializes in Midge dolls.
