How to Work a Balisong Butterfly Knife

Balisong is a word of Filipino origin which means "broken horn." This word generally refers to the two-piece hinged handle which conceals the "butterfly knife" blade when closed. Balisong butterfly knives were the first style of butterfly knife that could be expediently opened by using only one hand according to Balisong.net. A Balisong butterfly knife can be either double- or single-edged. To effectively learn how to work a Balisong butterfly knife, a single-edged blade is recommended to start with, and will keep you from cutting your hands while learning. Though many different techniques can be learned using a Balisong knife, it is best if beginners learn the quick open-and-close technique first.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the closed knife in your dominant hand, with your thumb resting in the crease between the handles and your four fingers resting underneath. Ensure that the bottom latch hinge is on the handle furthest away from your hand, and flip the latch open.

    • 2

Flip your wrist up--this action will open the handle thus exposing the blade--and the latch handle will land across the back of your fingers. You should now be holding one handle only.

    • 3

Turn the handle 180 degrees counterclockwise while simultaneously bending your wrist back to the starting position, then flip your hand up then back down. This will cause the handle and back of the blade to slap against the back of your fingers, then flip back to an open position.

    • 4

Reverse the process to close the handles and conceal the blade.
