How to Fill an S.T. Dupont Butane Lighter

S. T. Dupont is a fine-quality lighter maker in Paris, France. The lighters are crafted with detailed workmanship for impressive appearance and reliable performance. These internationally known butane lighters are among the top-quality cigar and cigarette lighters on the market, so they are pricey. The butane models are refillable, but their fill valves are not sized to fit standard butane-can nozzles. Butane cans are specially made for different S. T. Dupont models, or an additional small piece of equipment can be used with standard refill cans. Enjoy using an S. T. Dupont for years to come by filling it each time the gas is exhausted.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring the S. T. Dupont butane lighter into a well-ventilated open area away from any heat sources such as an oven or fireplace. Allow time for the lighter to cool off before filling.

    • 2

Turn the flame-height adjustment to the lowest setting. Use a small slotted screwdriver to adjust models with a set screw, using clockwise rotation to lower the flame height. Turn the thumb wheel manually to the low-flame direction on models with a thumb wheel.

    • 3

Hold the lighter over a solid surface away from your face and clothes. Remove the S. T. Dupont refill valve cover screw by twisting it counterclockwise between thumb and finger. Push the refill valve down with the blade of a screwdriver to release the pressurized air in the fuel tank, or place the adapter over the valve and press down. The air would otherwise prevent butane from entering the tank.

    • 4

Turn the S. T. Dupont lighter upside down. Shake the butane gas can and turn the nozzle downward. Put the nozzle of a refill can made for the S. T. Dupont model directly against the refill valve, or push the nozzle against the adapter over the valve and push the can downward. Hold the position for 5 seconds and release the downward pressure. Press the nozzle down an additional two or three times for 3 seconds.

    • 5

Allow 4 minutes for the S. T. Dupont butane lighter to warm to room temperature. Turn the set screw counterclockwise or roll the thumb wheel to adjust the flame back up to the desired height.
