Use a case blade to pry open the snap case back of an older Timex watch. Use the palm of your hand or a watchmaker̵7;s sticky rubber ball to unscrew counterclockwise a screw-down case back. Once the case back is removed, a rubber gasket sealing the case back and case will fall out, according to howwatcheswork.com.
Unwind the mechanical Timex watch by winding down the mainspring. The mainspring is a thin tightly rolled ribbon of steel found in the mainspring barrel. Rotate the crown to locate the stopper, which passes over the mainspring gear. Use a screwdriver to push aside the stopper to disengage it from the gear. The mainspring will unwind and the watch will stop. Use a screwdriver to unfasten two screws to remove the movement--the spring-loaded mechanical device that operates the watch--from the case. Place each part in a separate tray.
Use the hands remover tool by placing it on the Timex dial over the hands post. Place the hands-grabber tool on its feet atop the dial and separately pull the hands from the post. Use a screwdriver to remove the dial screws from the movement. Separate the dial from the movement.
Remove the parts from the watch. Use tweezers to remove the hour wheel and the brass gear under the dial. Use needle-nose pliers to remove the cannon pinion, a smaller gear on a tiny shaft. Use a screwdriver to unfasten the screws to remove the bridge that contains the mainspring and gears. Use the screwdriver to remove the mainspring. Remove the balance wheel under the bridge. Use tweezers to remove the jewels from their holes.
Clean the parts. Soak all parts in naphtha in shot glasses except the mainspring. Dry all parts with absorbent paper. Oil the jewel holes. Replace the movement̵7;s mainspring. Use a jeweler̵7;s loupe to examine each part for cracks or bending. Replace damaged parts. Replace rubber gasket.
Reassemble the timepiece in reverse order of its disassembly. Set the time and wind the Timex watch.
