Things You'll Need
Instructions
Consider the size of the watch. Pocket watches are larger than wristwatches, but still small enough to fit comfortably in a formal vest pocket. A pocket watch should also have a single hook at the top above the winder. This loop may have a thin wooden chain or leather string attached. The other end of the string or chain should have a hook or a pin to attach it to a vest.
Flip the pocket watch over. Determine if it has an open clock face or if the face of the clock hides behind a thin door. If there is a door, there should be a release switch on the side of the door or at the top of the watch. Run your hand along the face of the watch in order to find the release switch.
Open the watch to see the inside. Pocket watches will either open from the back or the face of the clock. Avoid touching any of the gears. In most cases, you will find a model number and the name of the company. Use this information to find out more about the company and the model of watch you have. Examine the exterior of the watch in its entirety as well. Search for any markings that may help you identify the make and model of the watch. Some markings can be very small and faint, requiring you to use a magnifying glass.
