How to Season a Briar Pipe

For those who enjoy the taste, style and pleasure that comes from smoking a pipe, smoking technique and pipe choice can be important. If a pipe is not seasoned and prepared properly, the taste can be off every time you smoke it. Seasoning a briar pipe can be especially important. The wood used to make the bowl of a briar pipe can be damaged if it receives too much heat or dottle (the buildup of carbon that forms whenever you smoke), thus ruining the pipe. Taking the time to correctly season your pipe can preserve the quality of your briar pipe.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the bowl of your briar pipe ¼ of the way with smoking tobacco. Light this tobacco and smoke the pipe as usual.

    • 2

Smoke the pipe with only ¼ of the bowl full at least 5 times before adding more tobacco. Smoking in small increments like this will allow each area of the bowl to fully absorb the taste and flavor of the tobacco and smoke, which is the point of seasoning.

    • 3

Progress to filling the bowl halfway with tobacco, and smoke the pipe that way at least 5 times before adding more tobacco.

    • 4

Fill the bowl ¾ of the way, and smoke at least 5 times before smoking a pipe with a full bowl. You should smoke your partially filled pipe between 15 to 20 times before smoking the pipe with a full bowl for optimal flavoring.
