How to Display Medallions

A medallion collection makes a special display for a home, business, military or educational setting. The U.S. Mint and private mints continue to issue medallions of interest to groups and collectors. Museums display medallions of historical significance; schools and clubs often display commemorative medallions. Dealers and private collectors sometimes use homemade or custom display fixtures. The challenge lies in selecting the display accessories for the specific collection from the many options available. Display cases organize, protect and present the medallion collection for greater enjoyment.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the medallions on a safe surface, such as a tablecloth. Space them at least 2 inches apart.

    • 2

Try out various groupings for the medallions to decide what kind of display items to purchase. For example: Display all the medallions together in one display case. Or display the medallions in two groups, such as all the older ones in one case and more recent medallions in a second case. Consider whether to set any of the medallions apart---for example, putting the two favorite ones in a presentation box in a glass-front cabinet.

    • 3

Set up the grouping or groupings and take measurements if you plan to get display cases or wall frames. Allow for at least 1 inch on all sides so the medallions won't be obscured by the display case's frame. Make notes on where each medallion goes.

    • 4

Examine display options to determine whether to get a glass-front cabinet, a wood-framed glass display case that sits on a table, a framed display that hangs on the wall or display stands such as racks (without covers). Glass-front cabinets are good for growing collections as the medallions are easily accessible and the display can be added to or changed. Curio cabinets come in both wall-mounted and free-standing styles and allow for grouping the medallions on different shelves. There are even bezels and chains available to mount a medallion to wear as a pendant. Check sizes of available cases and frames to compare with the measurements you took in Step 3.
