How to Ship a Pennant

A pennant traditionally refers to a flag flown by warships during their time at sea. It commonly refers to a commemorative flag used by sports teams who win certain titles or divisions, especially in baseball. Whether official or decorative, a pennant can be a highly collectible item, and using the proper packaging and shipping methods when sending a pennant through the mail are essential techniques in preserving the quality and value of the pennant.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the pennant in a gentle cloth. You may want to further protect the pennant, especially if it is a collectible item, by sealing the cloth-wrapped item in a plastic wrap or bag. That way, if the box somehow ends up in water or dirt during the shipping process, the pennant will arrive at its destination with little to no damage.

    • 2

Place the pennant in a large packing envelope or box. A box is more likely to keep the pennant from bending during shipping. If you use an envelope, opt for one that is wax-sealed or lined in bubble wrap. Write "Do Not Bend" in large, black letters on both sides of the envelope.

    • 3

Take the pennant to your local postal office or shipping store. There, you can chose from a variety of options, including regular first-class mail, ground shipping, priority and international shipping.

    • 4

Request insurance to cover the pennant. This is especially important if the pennant is a highly-valuable collectible. For a relatively low rate--usually under $2 as of January 2010--you can purchase insurance for the value of the pennant and protect your investment in the event of a lost or damaged shipment.
