How to Adjust the Crutch on a Wall Clock Pendulum

Wall clocks with pendulums are mechanical clocks. Hanging weights supply power to a system of internal gears. The movement of a pendulum regulates the time. If the pendulum swings unevenly, the wall clock will not keep accurate time. The pendulum is attached to a loop of wire called the crutch. Adjusting the crutch will fix the swing of the wall clock pendulum.

Instructions

    • 1

Use your hand to stop the pendulum on the wall clock. Wait for the pendulum to stop swinging. It should come to rest under the center of the clock face.

    • 2

Move the pendulum slightly to the right until it makes a clicking sound. Move it to the left until it makes another clicking sound.

    • 3

Note how far the pendulum is moved in each direction before it makes a clicking sound. It will click sooner on either the right or the left side of the wall clock.

    • 4

Bend the crutch slightly toward the side of the wall clock that clicked first when the pendulum was moved. Do not bend the crutch too much. The crutch wire is delicate and can break easily.

    • 5

Restart the pendulum and watch how it swings. If the pendulum does not swing evenly from side to side, stop the pendulum again, and readjust the crutch.
