Definition of Cutlass

A cutlass is a sword that has come to be associated with the sea. These swords are not only deadly but also practical. Cutlasses are no longer used as weapons but are still used symbolically and are collected as antiques.
  1. Identification

    • A cutlass has a blade that is shorter and wider than that of a saber. Some cutlasses are straight, while others are slightly curved.

    Function

    • A cutlass is able to fit inside sword belts, but it is also short enough to be used for cutting things such as rope and wood.

    Features

    • A cutlass has good hand protection, which reduces the chance that it will slip from the hand. The hand protection also blocks an opponent's sword strikes that would land on the hand.

    Pirates

    • The cutlass was commonly used by sailors. It has come to be associated with pirates and is often a part of pirate costumes.

    U.S. Military

    • The U.S. military uses cutlasses as a form of insignia to indicate rank.
