What Classes of Case Knives Are There?

W.R. Case &Sons Cutlery produces highly collectible handcrafted knives, in hundreds of variations. Its classification system resembles a zoological taxonomy of classes, species and subspecies.
  1. Classifications

    • Case produces two broad classifications of knives; pocketknives and fixed-blade knives.

    Patterns and Families

    • Every individual style of knife is known as a "pattern." Every pattern has a "family" of variations on that pattern. The variations are in attachments, handle material, length and other categories.

    Pocket Knives

    • The pocketknives are all folding knives. Among them are three types: penknives, with a blade on either end; jackknives, with a blade or blades on one end; and multi-blade knives, with two or more blades or attachments (like forks, scissors and files).

    Fixed Blade

    • The largest subcategory of fixed-blade knives are the hunting knives, including its Lightweight Hunter and Outdoor and Hunting patterns. Three nonhunting fixed-blade patterns in production during 2009 are the Desk Knife, the Presentation Bowie and the Ridgeback.

    Commemorative and Collectible

    • Case offers several licensed commemorative patterns, including its John Wayne Commemorative, a Johnny Cash model and a Richard Petty model. These are variations on its folding patterns.

    Aerospace and Defense

    • Case continues to produce knives for the U.S. Military and NASA; these models are not generally available, and are items high on the list of many collectors.
