How to Collect Karastan Rugs

Karastan rugs, first made in 1928, are machine-made oriental designs. Using a machine-driven loom, Karastan re-created the complexities of a hand-woven rug. Carpets from Karastan cover floors from wall to wall. Rugs, on the other hand, are individual pieces that are either rectangular, round or runners. Karastan rugs vary according to age, size, color, pattern, texture and material.

  Decide how broad or narrow your Karastan rug collection will be. You might decide to collect rugs from the 1920s or the 1960s. Your collection might focus on only Persian patterns or only contemporary floral designs. Alternatively, your rug collection might include only wool or only silk rugs.

  Maintain files for your rugs. Keep receipts, correspondence and any notes about the rugs you purchase.

  Refine your collection over time. As you become more knowledgeable about Karastan rugs, you may decide to narrow or change your focus.
