How to Set Up an 8 Movement Cuckoo Clock

Cuckoo clocks are popular timepieces named for the cuckoo that calls the hours. Cuckoo clocks are mechanical clocks. Weights supply power to a system of internal gears that turn the hands of the clock, and operate the cuckoo. Cuckoo clocks come in two major varieties: The first has a one-day movement that must be wound every day, while the second has an eight-day movement that needs winding only once every 8 days. It takes just a few moments to set up an eight-day movement cuckoo clock.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a place on the wall for hanging the eight-day movement cuckoo clock. The ideal position will contain a stud into which to hammer the nail that will hold up the clock. The stud will prevent the nail from ripping out of the wall. The cuckoo clock must be hung high enough that its weights never touch the floor.

    • 2

Hammer the nail into the stud. Hang the eight-day movement cuckoo clock from the hole in the back of the clock case. Straighten and untangle the clock chains, and make sure they do not touch each other.

    • 3

Attach a weight to each one of the cuckoo clock chains. The loop at the top of the weight fits over the hook at the bottom of the chain.

    • 4

Hook the pendulum onto the wire loop that hangs down from the bottom of the clock case. Make sure the pendulum does not hit the wall, or interfere with the chains.

    • 5

Wind the eight-day movement cuckoo clock by grasping the free end of one of the chains. This is the end without the weight. Place the other hand against the clock to prevent it from falling off the wall. Pull down on the free end of the chain until the weight on the other end of the chain is drawn all the way up to the bottom of the clock case. Wind all of the weights on the clock.

    • 6

Set the eight-day movement cuckoo clock by moving the minute hand in a CLOCKWISE direction. Do not move the minute hand counterclockwise. Do not move the hour hand. It will move on its own at the appropriate time. At each half hour and hour, stop moving the minute hand to allow the cuckoo to call. Continue turning the minute hand until both hands show the correct time.

    • 7

Pull up the weights again, if they have dropped. Swing the pendulum.
