History
The Craftsman name was created by Arthur Barrows in 1927. The name was from another company, Marion-Craftsman Tool Co., and he liked the name Craftsman and bought the rights to use it. Also, Tom Dunlap took over the tool department and improved the make and quality of the tools sold, creating the Craftsman brand.
Significance
How tools were used in America had changed from farmers to everyday Americans wanting to buy and use tools. As well as the fact the automobile industry had taken off around this time, and the Craftsman tools were of higher quality than other brands previously sold.
Types
The Craftsman vintage tool line is composed of hand, wood and small tools, and shop supplies and mechanic tools. Everything from hand drills and saws to band saws, jointers and shapers are sold. Wrenches, screwdrivers, clamps and sanders are part of the line.
Features
The tool line was improved dramatically by Tom Dunlap. Vintage Craftsman tools are chrome-plated and have sturdier handles. These improvements are what made the brand soar.
Considerations
If you are looking for vintage Craftsman tools, the cost has not increased much compared with current Craftsman tools. Look at the condition and make sure it has the Craftsman logo printed on it to make sure it is authentic.
