How to Collect Ouija Boards

Ouija boards (pronounced "wee-ja") have sparked fascination since their commercial debut in 1891. Since then, many people have tried to collect them, and some boards have become quite valuable. Finding antique Ouija boards is no easy task, however, due to their scarcity and high cost. By looking in the right places, you can greatly reduce the amount of work you would otherwise do attempting to track these unusual antiques.

  1. How to Find and Collect Ouija Boards

    • 1

Begin your search broadly, then narrow it down. Start with the Internet. Online auction sites such as eBay.com occasionally host auctions of antique Ouija boards. However, these usually have a host of bidders, and you can expect to pay upwards of $75 to $100 for a board. Try looking at smaller auction sites such as OnlineAuction.com or WeBidz.com. Additionally, you can search for occult-antique dealers who may carry antique Ouija boards.

    • 2

Inquire at auction houses. Sometimes the boards will pop up at these places, and auctioneers often take them as they generate a lot of interest. However---as with online auctions and websites---if you intend to bid, expect competition and a hefty price tag.

    • 3

Go to flea markets and antique shows. You may get lucky and stumble upon an amateur dealer selling one rather cheaply. However, this represents the exception rather than the rule, and Ouija boards sell quickly.

    • 4

Scour antique shops. Ouija boards can hide under linens or other antiques. Ask the shop owner whether he has any.In antique malls, you may need to do some searching yourself. When you're traveling, stop at antique malls in small towns. These more remote places can sometime hold rare and expensive antiques, or in your case, Ouija boards. And the owners will appreciate your business.

    • 5

Hunt for estate sales---especially those at older houses with a lot of unusual items. Keep a special eye out for estate sales on the edges of town or that may require a lot of driving; these sales will have a lower turnout, but you'll encounter more serious dealers.

    • 6

Watch the newspaper. In the case of estate sales, the hosts will sometimes list the item in the ad, or advertise unusual collectibles. In these instances, you may want to arrive early to stand in line outside the door. Occasionally, some owners will list an ad right in the paper, but this usually occurs only when the owner expects to fetch a large price.
