Stock up
The key to making money at a flea market is to sell items you have bought at a lower price. Look for sales and bargains at Walgreens, CVS, Target and Wal-Mart and stock up on items. Especially keep an eye out for essentials such as soap, shampoo or toothpaste. Watch the expiration date on food items. Shoppers will pay attention to this detail, and it's likely they will not buy an item if it is past the date.
Use coupons in conjunction with the sales and bargains you find. There are two coupon sources found in most newspapers -- Red Plum and Smart Source. Ask someone at your local newspaper if coupons are delivered each week. Tell him you are interested in receiving several copies a week, and ask about discounted rates for multiple subscriptions. You can also find printable coupons online. Download the printing program and start printing the coupons you need. See the Reference and Resource section for printable coupon sites.
Pack as much as you can in your vehicle the night before. You should leave with enough time to drive to the flea market and set up before dawn. Shoppers will arrive early.
Set up your items in an efficient manner so that everything is organized. Using tables will help significantly. Hundreds if not thousands of people may pass your area. Make sure all of your items are visible. If you do not have tables, place your items neatly on solid colored sheets on the ground. Allow your customers to walk through your area to see as much as possible.
Smile and greet your customers with a nice "Good morning" or "Hello." Be sure to thank them even if they do not purchase anything. They may come back by before the day is over.
