Types of Metal Detectors
Think about the type of objects you will be looking for and the areas where you will be using the metal detector. A general purpose metal detector is probably sufficient for most people who are just starting out, but there are also specialized detectors designed to pick up metals like gold or silver. General purpose detectors usually have adjustable controls for discrimination and sensitivity, allowing you to customize the settings for different types of objects. If you will be using your metal detector at the beach, look for one with a waterproof coil. These beach-use metal detectors will not have the same meter display as a land-based detector. Instead they alert the user to found items by emitting an audio signal that gets stronger as the user gets closer to the object.
Accessories
Besides the metal detector itself, you may need certain accessories. A storage bag makes it easy to carry the detector and any objects you find while out prospecting. Coil covers will give you another level of protection and prolong the life of your metal detector. If you are using a water-resistant metal detector, you will probably need a quality set of headphones to hear the audio signals emitted when an object is located. To save your back from the strain of continually bending over, you can buy a beach scoop to dig found items out of the ground.
Personal Comfort
Once you know what type of metal detector and accessories you need, the decision comes down to personal preference and comfort. Consider your physical fitness when looking at metal detectors. Remember that you may be holding the detector for several hours at a time, so the unit's weight may be an issue. Some metal detectors can be detached from the pole and hung from a waistband, which reduces the strain on your arms and hands. Before buying any metal detector, walk around with it at the store to make sure it will be comfortable in your hands.
