How to Clean Elk Ivories

Elk ivory make great necklaces, rings and hair jewelry. Maintaining a shiny collection of elk ivories is easy with the right techniques and tools.

  • Toothbrush

Instructions

      Lightly rub the ivories with lukewarm water to remove lose debris. Be careful not to scratch the ivory with your fingernails.

      Soak the ivories in 1 cup of peroxide for no longer than 24 hours.

      Rinse the ivories in lukewarm water and let them dry for 2 hours. If you fail to rinse the ivories after they soak, the peroxide will continue to erode them, resulting in a rough surface.

      Soak the the ivories in hot water. Gently brush them with a toothbrush using light, up and down strokes. This should remove any leftover debris from the crevices.

      Gently polish the ivories with a terry cloth towel.
