About Custom Folding Knives

Custom folding knives are precision instruments, made with the finest materials. They are also works of art with handles hand carved out of the most expensive woods, inlaid with gems or hand painted. Custom folding knife makers are well known, each with his own style, just as a painter would be. Custom folding knives take a long time to create and they show it.
  1. History

    • Folding knives were invented out of necessity, to protect the owner from being cut by his own knife. Folding knives are known to have existed as far back as ancient Rome and they were single-blade models. The double-blade knife did not make an appearance until the 1700s.

    Types

    • Custom folding knives come in every type and blade style including: Damascus, a knife with a blade made of a special hot forged steel that was first used to make swords back in the 12th to 18th centuries; drop point, a knife used by hunters with a wider blade that tapers to a point; the dagger, a knife that has a blade with two sharp sides instead of one like most others have.

    Features

    • Blades are made with the finest metals such as titanium or Damascus steel. Custom folding knives have handles made of materials such as mother of pearl, black pearl and exotic woods that can be hand carved into whatever the artist want them to be. The designs range from the traditional to modern art with a combination of bright colors. The most important feature is the fact that no two custom-made knives are exactly alike.

    Considerations

    • Before you buy a custom folding knife, make sure you know your local laws. They could be considered a concealed weapon. They are not antique knives, which could fall into a collectible category, but the laws are different everywhere.

    Identification

    • There are certain things that a custom-made folding knife should have in order to identify it as top of the line and worth more money. Look inside the handle of the knife. It should be finished and clean. There should be very little play in the blade. Make sure the blade opens smoothly. When the knife is closed, the blade should be sitting in the middle of the frame and when it is opened, the top of the knife should be in line with the spine of the handle. And the knife should be clean and free from oil. If it is well made, it will not need any oil.
