Do your research. Depending on where you live, you are only able to see between 1,000 and 8,000 stars each night, and the vast majority of these stars are impossible to pinpoint using the naked eye. Visit The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for helpful information on what constellations are brightest in the Canadian sky and the current observation conditions in your city, among many other helpful hints.
Visit a star registering company that is specific to Canada. There are many star registering companies on the web, but in order to find stars in Canada, you need to use a Canadian star registry. The International Star Registry of Canada will provide you with simple instructions and easy methods for selecting, registering and certifying your star. The ISR of Canada will automatically select a star for the Hubble Guide Star Catalog that is viewable in the area of Canada where you live.
Know the average costs. Naming a star in Canada can cost anywhere from $40 to $200, depending on the company and package you use, so be prepared and aware. Do plenty of research and go with the company that best suits your needs. Check your company's reputation by searching the Canadian affiliate of the Better Business Bureau.
Fill out the necessary information. Be sure to include the proper spelling of the name your are registering for star recognition. You will be asked to choose a constellation in which the star will be selected, and you’ll also be asked to provide a current and valid address. Keep in mind that Canada is a big country, and a current location is vital to coordinating the best viewing area for your star.
Give yourself adequate time. It only takes about 48 hours for your star order to be processed, but it can take up to two weeks for your certificate, plaque and registration paperwork to be received. If you’re buying a star as a gift, give yourself adequate time for processing and delivery.
Pay for your star. Most companies, like the International Star Registry of Canada will allow you to pay online with a credit card at the completion of your order, but if you prefer to pay by check or money order, you may also print out a paper order form and mail it to the company with your payment instead.
Buy a telescope. Using the provided astronomical chart that comes with your registered star coordinates and a basic telescope will ensure that you can easily locate your star. To find a good hobby telescope, visit a local, small chain, astrology store in your area. Most of these stores are operated by amateur astronomers who can offer helpful advice. You can also purchase pre-owned telescopes from the Astro Buysell website, which is a telescope trading site exclusive to Canadians. Visit Scope Reviews online for more information and advice on telescopes.
