How to Choose a Model Train Set

A model train set is a hobby item that can provide lasting satisfaction over time. Whether you are purchasing a train set for yourself or someone else, there are so many styles, sizes and accessories that it can be hard to choose the right one. A model train set has the ability to grow over the years as more things are added to it and additional care is put into its upkeep, depending on the devotion to the hobby by its owner.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the model train set based upon who it is for. A young child does not need as elaborate a train as a teenager or adult. If the train is for holidays only, it should be smaller than if the train is for permanent display.

    • 2

Measure the area where the train set will be set up. If you are buying it as a gift, you might have to estimate the size. Talk to the clerk at the hobby shop about the right size train and track for this area.

    • 3

Determine the right scale of the train set based upon the person you are choosing it for. Children work better with larger scale trains, such as HO and upwards. An older model train collector might prefer a smaller and more intricate scale of train, such as Z or N.

Learn about the available accessories for the model train set you are selecting. Certain scales, such as HO, have many accessories available that can be added to the set over time. Visit your local hobby shop and ask the clerk about the accessories for a particular scale.
