How to Do Gravestone Rubbings

Gravestone rubbing began more than 130 years ago in Europe. This practice was put into place to give a written record of deaths. Today, this practice is so popular that in some places, Westminster Abbey for example, you must make a reservation to do gravestone rubbings. In the U.S., there are so many old gravestones with such delicate artwork that one need not wait in line to practice this art. With a small list of supplies and a bit of free time and patience, the art of gravestone rubbings can become one of your most favorite hobbies.

Instructions

Prepare the stone. You may need to cut away any grass or weeds and remove insects. Use the brush to remove any moss or dirt that may prevent you from making a clear rubbing. You may need to wipe away dirt or mud with a cloth to prepare the surface.

Secure the rubbing. Using the masking tape, securely tape the top, bottom and sides of the rice paper to the gravestone itself. Try to secure it so that the main portion of the paper is over the artwork and is unable to slide when rubbed.

    • 3

Start the rubbing. Using the broadest part of the graphite wax or crayon, start from the top and go all the way down the paper. Cover the entire area you wanted to rub with a light layer of color. If places need to be darkened, go over them again. Remember to hold the paper in place so that the artwork isn't messed up. Peel the crayons before using them to give a broader rubbing surface.

Check the details. With the pointed edge of the graphite wax or crayon, draw around the edges of the artwork to give more contrast to the rubbing. You can also do this to outline the dates and names on the gravestone.

Do a final once over. Stand back to make sure that it is as dark as you want it. Many times you will need to go over the gravestone several times to get the design dark enough. When you have exactly what you want, carefully remove the tape and gently roll the drawing up so that it doesn't get smudged.
