How to Care for Fine China

Fina china often carries with it important memories. Your china might have been handed down through your family, or maybe you picked it out with your spouse when you were registering for your wedding. No matter how you acquired your fine china, you want it to last, so it's important to know how to properly care for it.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your time when washing your fine china. Place a towel on the bottom of your sink to prevent your dinnerware from coming into contact with the hard surface. Use a soft, rubber spatula rather than metal silverware to scrape off food. Fill your sink with warm water and ease the china into the water slowly so the heat distributes evenly. Wash only one piece of china at a time. Never fill the sink full of dinnerware.

    • 2

Avoid stacking your dishes after you wash them. Dry the china carefully with a soft dish towel before washing the next piece.

    • 3

Rinse your china immediately after using it if you're not planning on washing it for a couple of hours. Rinsing helps prevent staining.

    • 4

Wash tea and coffee cups with a mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide and three parts water. Add a drop of clear household ammonia to the mixture, and rinse your cups with warm water.

    • 5

Store your china in moderate room temperature. Never keep your china in a cold garage or hot attic. Extreme temperatures can cause your flatware to crack.

    • 6

Treat small surface cracks by placing your china in a pan of warm milk for about 30 minutes.
