How to Buy Vintage Magazines

Magazines have been printed for centuries, typically offering a lighter fare than bound books and other periodicals. Vintage magazines are very collectible, and finding them is often a great adventure.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a particular genre that interests the buyer. Some collectors stay within an area they enjoy such as cars, pulp fiction or fashion magazines. This will narrow down the hunt and focus attention of specific pieces.

    • 2

Collect only first issues of vintage magazines. Most people don't remember the last issue of anything, but the very first issue is special in any collection.

    • 3

Try to collect an entire run of a particular vintage magazine. Short run magazines are the easiest to start with, as are those that were rarely printed.

    • 4

Buy only the issues that are in the best condition and keep them that way. Vintage magazines need proper storage and protection from sunlight if they are being displayed. Damaged issues fetch a far lower premium than mint ones.

    • 5

Find an old bookstore that offers a large variety of back issues of newspapers and magazines. These archives often offer up a treasure or two hidden away among the typical magazines.

    • 6

Look online at auction houses and antique dealers that provide a listing of all of the books and magazines they have on offer or up for bid. Contact the seller directly to inquire more about the items.
