How to Find Old Bottles

Bottle collecting is a favorite among dealers and hobbyists. Starting a collection need not be expensive or difficult. Antique stores and even thrift shops can reveal bottle treasures. With a little education and luck, bottle hunting can become a rewarding hobby that will fill up a curio cabinet in no time at all.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an area or genre of old bottle to collect. Many collectors buy only medical bottles where others enjoy collecting old alcohol related bottles.

    • 2

Take a walk down a secluded or rarely visited beach. Search around the mangroves or shoreline for discarded old bottles or those that have washed up from the sea. Wonderful old bottles from centuries past might be hidden in the sand.

    • 3

Search for rare or valuable old perfume bottles made by Baccarat, Galle, Lalique and Moser. Rare Western Whiskey bottles are a favorite among collectors as well.

    • 4

Go out to antique stores or talk with dealers to find great bargains on old bottles. Dealers network with other dealers and almost all of them know where to find great old bottle specimens.

    • 5

Search through thrift stores, garage sales and flea markets for bottles. People often sell or donate interesting examples without knowing there is a market for them.

    • 6

Ask around the neighborhood to see if anyone might have a collection they are willing to sell. This is an easy method of starting a pre-made collection.
