How to Collect Shark Teeth

If you've ever been to an oceanside beach, you may have noticed little black triangles among the shells and sand. Those triangles may be fossilized shark's teeth that have been washed upon the shore. Many people find that collecting them is a fun hobby, and you may be like it, too. Follow these tips to collect shark's teeth.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at a shark-teeth guide to see what kinds of teeth you might find. Make sure you look at a chart for your particular area. Find the species in your locality.

    • 2

Go out to the beach early in the morning before others are out. Look in the sand at the very edge of the shore where the waves go in and out.

    • 3

Take advantage of when the tide goes out. You can search areas that were previously covered by sand and water. Look in areas with large rocks because sea treasures often get stuck between the rocks.

    • 4

Bring a sifter to sift the teeth out of the sand and carry a container for your shark's teeth. Make sure the sifter has big enough holes to let the sand out and small enough holes to keep the teeth in. The teeth are very tiny, so you will want a sturdy bucket or carrying case that has no holes in it.

    • 5

Know what you are looking for. The teeth are generally not white, but black because they usually wash up as fossilized teeth.

    • 6

Look at the shape, the size, the color and the markings on the teeth. Check a shark chart to find out which are rare teeth and which are common ones.

    • 7

Recognize older teeth, which can fetch more money because they are rare. Make sure you identify them correctly.

    • 8

View prices or buy teeth online. Get a catalog so you can compare teeth or chat with a collector in a forum.
