How to Collect Ashtrays

Many ashtray collections start out from smokers who just always need another ashtray. Soon they realize that there are some interesting and unusual ashtrays in their collection, and they decide to make this a hobby. But even if you don't smoke, you can still collect ashtrays.

Instructions

  Find unique ashtrays to collect at bars and restaurants. Ask the owner or manager if you can buy the ashtray to add to your collection.

  Go to flea markets and garage sales and look for ashtrays to collect.

  Purchase unusual ashtrays in gift shops such as "Spencer's" (see Resources below). Ask the clerk to notify you when new and different ashtrays come in that you may want to add to your collection.

  Look in souvenir shops when traveling for unique ashtrays to collect. Ask the clerk for assistance and advise him that your hobby is collecting ashtrays.

  Swap ashtrays with friends and other collectors. Let your friends and family know you collect ashtrays and request that they stay on the lookout for ashtrays you may want to collect.

  Start your own collector's club or online group. You can go to Yahoo! and start your own "Ashtray Collector's" group for people who make ashtray collecting their hobby. Take pictures of your ashtrays, post them online and ask the other group members to do the same. Share stories about your ashtray collection and explain how you obtained it.
