Choose the color of the background carefully. It may be tempting to use some beautiful fabric that matches the doll, but this is the worst choice to make. Using a contrasting color such as a green background against a pink dress can sometimes be successful. However, probably the safest choice is a soft gray, blue or off-white. Once on film, a bright color may draw attention away from the doll even if it is contrasting.
Stay away from textures. Even a very small or minimal texture can be greatly emphasized on film. The best way to avoid this is to not use fabric at all, but instead use poster board or card stock.
Choose a background that is dull with no shine to it. This will prevent a glare in the photo, which would subtract from the main focus of the photo--the doll.
Avoid using a pattern in the background. No matter what material you choose for the background, a pattern is distracting. Once again, attention will be taken away from the subject of the picture.
Take a digital photo. Using a digital photo will allow the background to be minimized or dulled. You will also be able to enhance the colors and brightness of the doll.
