How to Buy Samurai Armor

Of all the armor that mankind (and sometimes womankind) has worn for protection in battle, none come close to samurai armor for beauty, mythic design and clever utility. Each set of armor was a work or art, lacquered to a sheen seemingly out of place for the armor's function. It is still possible to own such armor, and its magic is unabated by time.

  Learn about samurai history, including the history of armor online (see Resources below). As you read through the history of armor, realize that its design varied historically not primarily because of custom but rather as a response to weaponry.

  Check a website that catalogues all the different parts of a set of armor.

  Review the various types of armor worn during the period of protohistory, the early middle ages, the high middle ages, the late medieval period, and the post-period period. decide which of these types of armor you want to own.

  Decide if you want to pursue authentic, antique armor or modern facsimiles.

  Visit one of the galleries that specializes in antique samurai armor. Explore what has recently been purchased and the prices of various items. If you are committed to authentic armor and a full set is beyond your budget, check out individual pieces. In this regard, Kabutos are a popular first piece in a collection.

  Visit the websites of some of the companies that manufacture facsimiles if this is the route you choose to follow, or if you decide to buy both facsimiles and original pieces.
