How to Collect Miniature Lamps

Miniature lamps are popular collector items. Oil and kerosene lamps from the Victorian era are especially sought after. Referred to as "miniature" because they're so small, they can't provide adequate light for reading, they can range in size from a few inches to about 12 inches. With choices from the delicate and ornate, to the plain and utilitarian, you can compile a diverse collection.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the miniature lamp market and history. Two books to check out are "Miniature Lamps II" by Ruth E. Smith and "Miniature Lamps Pricing Guide" by Marjorie Hulsebus. "Those Fascinating Little Lamps" by John Solverson offers more in-depth information about collecting lamps. The book is out of print, but you may be able to check it of your local library, or buy if from a used book store or online.

Refer to the miniature lamp books often. These guides will help you to recognize collectible miniature lamps. Very few lamps referred to as miniature are actually smaller reproductions of full size lamps. To some collectors, the miniature label is based on burner size; other collectors prefer to use height, typically no taller than 10 inches.

    • 3

Join a collector's club and sign-up for any services they offer, such as an online discussion group or newsletter. You'll get valuable information, advice and resources to build your collection. The Nightlight Club website (see link in Resources) is must for miniature oil lamp enthusiasts. It offers a newsletter and updates members on conventions and other developments in the market.

    • 4

Look for miniature lamps at antique stores, estate sales, garage sales and thrift shops. Attend antique lighting tradeshows. Check out general lighting tradeshows as well, sometimes antique dealers attend these. Tell your family and friends about your collection and ask them to be on the look-out for lamps to add to your collection.

    • 5

Decide how to display your collections. Depending on the space you have available and the size of your collection, you may have to store some of your pieces. This helps because you can display your favorite pieces and cut down on dusting.

    • 6

Use a soft, lint free cloth and distilled water to clean the lamps because chemical agents and harsh cleansers can damage the lamps and diminish the value.

    • 7

Store your most valuable and rate pieces in a safe place and consider insuring your collection if it's of significant value.
