How to Collect Carnival Glass

Carnival glass is a colored, pressed glass with an iridescent finish. Between 1905 and 1930, only 1,000 different collectible patterns were made in the United States, and most were from only five companies.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for carnival glass at antique shops and from collectors. Members of your family may also have some pieces and not realize their value.

    • 2

Remember that aside from condition color is the most important factor in determining the value of carnival glass, which comes in three color groups: marigold, dark (a blue, purple or green) and pastel - marigold being the least valuable and pastel the most valuable.

    • 3

Buy a pricing guide for carnival glass and familiarize yourself with the different patterns, colors and values.

    • 4

Focus your collection on one pattern, or collect as many types as you'd like.

    • 5

Examine all pieces for damage before purchasing.

    • 6

Ask about the piece's provenance (history and authentication) before purchasing, but don't rely solely on what the seller tells you. Do your own research.

    • 7

Join a glass collectors' group in your local area and attend conventions about glass collecting.
