How to Exhibit Postcards

Artistic exhibitions take place in every country. Postcard exhibitions can vary; the most common categories are topographical, thematic, social and/or historical and classification. Topographical exhibitions display postcards from a certain geographical location such as specific countries or regions in the world. Thematic postcards are postcards that depict certain objects regardless of location or artist; some examples are tulips, light houses and roller coasters. Social and/or historical genre includes postcards that depict a period of history or the lifestyle of certain social classes, i.e. the Civil War or poverty. Classification exhibits are displays of postcards that all have something in common, such as a single artist.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a theme for your project. Will this collection be topographical, thematic, social/historical or classification?

    • 2

Type and print out the final copy of your title page and synopsis page. The title page sets the stage for your collection. It should describe your project and the goal of your collection. You will also need a descriptive title for your compilation. The synopsis page should be written if you intend on putting your project into an art exhibition, in which case only the judges will be able to see your synopsis page. On the synopsis page, you should write about the problems, challenges and positive points of your project. This is best done in bullet form with comments that are straight to the point.

Experiment with different page layouts. It is not recommended to repeat the layout on each page. You can use one layout more than once, but change it up in the pages in between. For instance, on one page you can have two postcards parallel to each other and the edge of the page. On the next page, play with angles, place the cards diagonally and try to fit more than two postcards on the page. Remember when placing your postcards that each postcard should have a small caption, or a large caption on the page describing all of the postcards on the page.

Mount your postcards. You can use an adhesive, such as a glue stick, or you can use corner pockets to display your cards, making them available for removal. Use any scrap-booking supplies you may need to do this.
