How to Remove the Plastic Residue From a Vinyl LP

For the analog audio fanatic, vinyl record collecting isn't just a hobby, it is a lifestyle. This includes the ongoing maintenance that is necessary when collecting vintage, long-playing (LP) records. One of the most common problems in collecting vintage records is that the plastic residue on the record sleeve often sticks to the surface of the record. This usually causes major audio and playback issues on the record's grooves. Fortunately, you can remove the plastic residue with some common household items found at most convenience stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the vinyl record from its sleeve. Place the record flat on a lint-free, padded surface.

    • 2

Use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe away and dust or debris from the record's surface.

    • 3

Apply a generous amount of lanolin-free Isopropyl or rubbing alcohol to a lint-free cloth. Firmly, but gently, wipe the surface of the record in a circular motion. Do this until all the plastic residue is removed from the record's surface.

    • 4

Wipe down the record's surface with your dry cloth until the surface is completely dry. You may also let the surface air dry for about 30 minutes. Do not attempt to use a hair dryer or other heat-drying device.

    • 5

Repeat this procedure to clean the opposite side of the record, as well as any other records with plastic residue.
