How to Make an LP Mailer

Preparing a mailer to protect a long-playing vinyl record album (LP) during shipping can be done with relative ease. Only a few commonly found materials are needed. The key to safely shipping an LP is to make sure that the packaging is sturdy enough to prevent the album jacket from bending.

Things You'll Need

  • Double wall cardboard
  • Tape measure
  • Ink pen
  • Utility knife
  • Clear packing tape
  • Plastic garbage bag, 13 gallon
  • 6 x 8 inch piece of white paper
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Using the tape measure and pen, draw lines on the double wall cardboard. You need two 14 x 14 inch squares. Then use the utility knife to cut along the lines.

    • 2

Place one piece of cardboard over the other. Using the packing tape, seal three of the four sides. Stretch the tape across the seam, cut the tape, and fold over.

    • 3

Place the LP in the plastic garbage bag. Fold the excess plastic over until the bag forms outer wrapping that matches the size of the LP jacket. Use a small piece of packing tape to keep the bag in place.

    • 4

Slide the bagged LP in between the taped squares of cardboard. Standard LP jackets are slightly larger than 12 x 12 inches, so the fit will be snug.

    • 5

Using the packing tape, seal the remaining seam of cardboard. The 14 x 14 inch cardboard square now contains the LP, enclosed on all four sides.

    • 6

Using the scissors, cut the white paper to 6 x 8 inches (if needed). With the pen, write the mailing and return addresses on the paper. Using the packing tape, affix the paper to the front of the newly constructed mailer.

    • 7

With the pen, write "FRAGILE: DO NOT BEND" in large letters below the mailing label.
