How to Collect Vintage Audio Equipment

The first things one should know when collecting vintage audio equipment is where to look and what to look for. People have different preferences and thus will search for different items that are of particular interest to them. A classic guitar tube amplifier would probably not be of interest to a person seeking antique radios or their components.

Check out antique shops and malls. This can be hit or miss, but sometimes trips to the local antiques dealer can yield excellent results. If results at an antique shop are less than desirable, ask the dealer personally where would be a good spot to look. Most of the time, provided you are in an area with a decent population of people as well as commerce, the dealer can lead you in the right direction.

Visit your local record store. Try to find one that sells not only compact discs and posters, but vintage vinyl and collector's albums. Generally, people who work in record stores have a passion for music and are often times musicians and artists, and if they are not, they still probably have a nice stereo. Most record stores have bulletin boards for bands, people looking to start a band and sometimes people looking to sell, or buy, specific albums or pieces of equipment. Plenty of good record stores will have classic tube amplifiers, turntables and other vintage home stereo equipment, such as equalizers.

Search out shops with curious electronic collections. These can be an endless resource when it comes to gear and components. That being the case, any store that has an employee who does electronic repairs will have something to offer, whether it be a repair, a part or an entire piece of equipment. The repair department can also help a person track down elusive parts because sometimes it is their job to order needed materials for repairs.

Browse online. The Internet is also an amazing way to locate exactly what is sought. There are thousands of websites and forums that cater specifically to the audio gear nerd. It is equally as effective for researching and gathering information on any piece of gear that has been defined as vintage by experts, professional musicians and collectors.
