How to Clean Old Phonagraph Records

Phonograph records are extremely old and should be cleaned regularly to ensure working order and longevity. Always handle phonographic records with care, as they scratch easily. Using the wrong cleaning product (such as those that contain alcohol) can warp and breakdown the record causing a black, gooey mess. Fortunately, cleaning your phonograph records is extremely easy. All you need are a few supplies and a gentle touch.

Wipe away any dust that may have accumulated on your record with a soft cloth. Start at the top of the record and use long strokes, working in a clockwise direction.

Spray window cleaner onto a second cloth. Never spray cleaner directly onto the record, as this can damage the record irreparably.

Wipe the window cleaner over the record. Start at the top and make long strokes, working in a clockwise motion. Go around the entire record. Continue wiping down the record in this manner. Starting at the top and moving in toward the center.
