How to Find Parts for a Record Player

Record players seem like antiques next to CD and DVD players, but turntables and record players provide great analog listening enjoyment. With proper maintenance a record player's electronics may never wear out, but a record player's needle and cartridge arm need replaced on a regular basis for optimum performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Track down all the part numbers and keep a master list on file. Put the master list of parts on the bottom or back of the turntable. Keep all phone numbers and contact information for audio parts suppliers on the same list for convenience.

    • 2

Shop online. There are dozens of websites that specialize in antique and hard-to-find audio parts. Before sending money to any website, or providing a credit card number for online ordering, a buyer should be sure personal information is protected by a secure transaction interface.

    • 3

Visit old audio stores. To survive, many older electronics stores had to switch to digital audio equipment, but older store employees and owners often have a supply of old parts and many contacts in the business. For a small fee, or just to make a sale, the store staff will be happy to help track down parts.

    • 4

Attend flea markets and antique shows. These local markets always have some audio equipment available. Many times the owners have held on to the antiquated equipment for many years and can offer great advice for finding parts.

    • 5

Shop at local thrift stores for scavenge material. Thrift store audio equipment will most likely be non-functioning or have battered casing, but there may be some useful pieces within an otherwise piece of junk.
