How to Identify Precious Ruby Stones

Ruby gemstones are one of the most valuable and precious of all stones on earth. Hence, they are one of the most sought after gems known to man. Mostly found in Burma, these beautiful stones take long trips all over the world to meet consumer demand. While shopping for jewelry, it may be difficult to distinguish between real or fake, valuable or not, to the untrained eye. There are a few tricks one should know before venturing on their quest to choose the perfect precious ruby scam, if a scam is to be avoided.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the color of this precious stone. Rubies are red. The more brilliant the color, the more its authenticity can be considered verifiable. Their color may sometimes include hues of pinks, blues or purples, but these colors will not dominate the gem's color. In this case, if the stone is authentic, the brilliance must be checked. If the brilliance level is high, its value is untarnished.

    • 2

Check the cut. The next thing that should be looked at when verifying the credibility of a ruby is its cut, or shape. The facets must be symmetrical. If it has dark spots or chips in its center, it loses its value. The reason for this is that the stone will lose its natural sparkle and brilliance. The shape of the cut of the stone will not affect its value. Precious rubies come in many shapes and sizes. As long as the edges are clean and symmetrical, it is acceptable.

    • 3

Check the size. One must be very cautious when shopping for larger scale rubies. Above 3 carats in size is rare to find. Therefore, one should be extremely wary when looking at rubies of this size. Make sure it is not a fake. To do so, examine it very carefully.

    • 4

Watch out for clever names. Don't buy any ruby that is called "cultured," "created," or a fancy name such as a Brazilian Ruby. These names all mean that the rubies are synthetic, which makes them nothing more than colored glass.

    • 5

Keep an eye out for gas bubbles or streaks; these are signs of synthetic rubies. Also note if the facets are dull. A real ruby's facets are sharp and crisp. Fake rubies are also softer than real rubies. If an alleged ruby has many streaks or scratches in it, it is most likely not a real.

    • 6

Get the ruby checked out by a gemologist. There is only so much you can do to tell if a ruby is a fake or not. In the end, if you're not sure you'll need to have a professional look at it. Gemologists use various tests like light absorption, synthetic specific inclusions and other methods that aren't available to the general public.
