How to Cut Geodes in Half

Geodes are round, hollow rocks with crystal formations on the inside. It is entirely unknown as to what causes geodes to form and, as it stands, no scientist has successfully replicated the process. There are hundreds of different geode crystal structures that differ in color and shape. The determining factor for any geode is the chemicals inside it.

Instructions

    • 1

Etch a line around the entire outside of the geode using your chisel. This process is called scoring, and it will create a line of weakness where the geode will eventually crack.

    • 2

Retrace the line by pressing the chisel further into the rock's surface with your hammer. Continue traveling around the geode until you see a crack.

    • 3

Follow the crack with your hammer and chisel until the geode splits open.
