What Are the Uses of the Gemstone Peridot?

Peridot is a vivid green gemstone sometimes referred to as chrysolite or olivine. The shade of green varies from according to its source and its inclusions, but you will find peridot in no other color -- a rare quality in gemstones. It can be difficult for gem-cutters to work with, but once it's cut and set into jewelry, it's relatively easy to care for. Protect it from scratches and hard knocks and use gentle dish soap only when cleaning.
  1. Birthstones, Anniversaries and Sun Signs

    • Peridot is the birthstone for the month of August. It should come as no surprise, then, that peridot jewelry is often recommended as an accessory to light and airy summer outfits. The peridot is also a traditional gift for a 16th wedding anniversary and corresponds with the astrological sign of Libra.

    Emerald Substitute

    • If you love the look of emeralds but can't afford their price tag, peridot is the gemstone for you. Transparent stones with a deep-green color will be more expensive than other forms of peridot, but still more affordable than rarer emerald gems.

    Peridot Superstitions

    • Peridot jewelry is believed to bring peace and luck to its wearer. In Hawaiian mythology, peridot symbolizes the tears of the volcano goddess Pele -- which stands to reason, as peridot is often formed in volcanic rock.
