Gemstones, also known as "precious stones," are sought after for for their beautiful appearance as jewelry or room displays, and occasionally for crystal healing. There are gemstones mines located throughout each of the world's continents, but the kind of stone that is mined varies between geographical locations.

Diamonds
- Diamond has become synonymous with engagement and marriage.
  
  Diamonds are mined from the Amazon, as well as from Australia and Russia. Diamonds are one of the most sought-after gemstones, both for their high monetary value and their association with romance. Diamond is also used as a stone-cutting tool, because of its hardness and durability.
Agate
- Agate has characteristic concentric circles, colors and textures.
  
  Agate is a particularly decorative stone, recognized by its decreasing circular pattern of color and texture.
Jade
- Jade has a greasy appearance.
  
  Jade is found predominantly in shades of green, and has a "greasy lustre." This stone has been in human use for about 7,000 years.
Opal
- Opal is valued for its iridescence.
  
  Opal is described as "iridescent" or "opalescent." It flashes shimmers of varied colors in different lights. It is a very popular stone used in jewelry making, and its value varies depending on the density of color it emits.
