How to Find Quartz Crystals at Devils Head

Quartz crystal is one of the most common minerals found on the planet earth. It also comes in a variety of different colors, shades, sizes and qualities. For the avid collector one of the best places to find quartz crystal is Devil's Head Mountain in Colorado. But while you may find some quartz while you're just walking around the mountain, you should make a plan if you're seriously hunting.

  Research the types of quartz that are found at Devil's Head and become familiar with them. Smoky quartz is the most common, which forms in a crystal with a dark, gray tone. These quartz stones are also found in rocky outcrops or in pockets formed by stone.

  Go to Devil's Head and walk through the mountain's rock collection area. Look for places where rock juts out from the soil, showing that the stone is close to the surface. Also keep a close eye out for holes in the ground where quartz could have been exposed.

  Examine the quartz once you've found it to make sure you want it. If it's attached to a rock, then chip away at the rock with your pick until the quartz comes free. Keep looking and collecting until you have all of the quartz that you want.
