How to Preserve Uncut Opals

Although they suffered a mythological stigma as a bad-luck stone throughout the 19th century, opals have enjoyed renewed popularity in today's markets. An opal is a form of quartz crystal that contains a small amount of water within its structure. This water creates the opal's characteristic fire. However, because opals contain water, they can crack if they become too dry. This is preventable with proper maintenance.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a soft cloth in mineral oil. Gently rub the cloth over the surface of the opal, working your way around it by making small circles.

    • 2

Wipe the opal again using a portion of the cloth that does not have mineral oil on it.

    • 3

Repeat as needed every few months, particularly during dry seasons.

    • 4

Keep the opal in a room where the humidity does not dip below 35 percent, as a dry humidity level will promote cracks.
