How to Find Gold Nuggets With a DFX

The White's DFX is a high-quality metal detector. It consists of a sensing loop at the end of a wand that is attached to the detector electronics in a box housing. Results are shown on an electronic display. A variety of metals can be detected with the device. The White's DFX metal detector has a predefined setting that can be selected when specifically searching for gold nuggets. The detector can identify gold nuggets as small as a third of a gram.

      Locate an area that is geologically likely to bear gold in nugget form. Identify the specific are to be searched. Ensure that you have permission to search in the area and understand the laws concerning the use of metal detectors.

      Turn the device on. Place the trigger on the back of the display in the center position. Wait for the display to show the Main Menu. Select "Preset Programs." Press the down arrow to select the "Prospecting" mode and press the "Enter" button.

      Walk forward slowly over the area to be searched, taking small steps. As you do, sweep the sensing loop at the end of the device back and forth over the ground. Overlap each pass of the loop, keeping it close to the ground.

      Listen for an audible beep. In prospect mode, all metals will respond with a beep. The Visual Discrimination Indicator, or VDI, number on the display will show only metals that are likely to be gold. Ignore any beep that does not also show a valid VDI number.

      Squeeze the trigger switch when a beep is heard and VDI number is displayed. Move the device in an X pattern slowly over the spot to pinpoint the target. Dig the spot once the target is pinpointed.
