How to Search for Sea Glass on Delaware Beaches

In recent years, collecting sea glass has become a popular pastime, and the Delaware shore churns up pieces of sea glass from shipwrecks and maritime wars of over 100 years ago. Genuine sea glass originates from discarded tableware or bottles at sea, glass from shipwrecks or household items from natural disasters. Over several years, sea glass takes its shape and finish from constant water and sand contact. Delaware beaches are the perfect places to find rare sea glass pieces.

Select a time. The best time for beachcombing is after a storm, in the early morning or in inclement weather, if you dare.

Pick a location. Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes, Delaware, is a great starting point with a long stretch for beachcombing. The park is open year round but there is an $8 charge per car (or $4 for residents) from May 1 to October 31.

Collect your sea glass in your plastic bag or pail. Look for places on the shore with coarser sand and rock accumulation. Comb through the area. When wet, sea glass will appear dull in finish and the darker pieces may be mistaken for rocks, so take your time.
